You probably know by now (your posting was on next page) but just in case - A positive foil is when the picture is drawn in gold on a clear background- you would be able to colour in the picture in between the gold lines.
A negative is when the dark bits are light and the light bits are dark. The negative would be the other way round- drawing clear lines against a gold background, like you would with a scraperboard. You would colour the clear bits as well, and it would have an opposite effect.
